On the move...

For the past three years, this has been home. We put it on the market Friday, and it sold THAT SAME DAY! We move out May 24th.

And on April 25th, we gain possession of this 1920 brick beauty in Kansas City, Kansas.

It needs some work before we move in, but we praise God for doing more than we could even ask for or imagine: buying a new house and selling our old one in just one week!

Obviously this adventure is just beginning. We have lots of work ahead of us to pack up here and get the new house ready to move in. Please pray that we would honor God with our actions and attitudes during this "crunch time" and transition well.

English Classes

I've taught ESL in several different programs, but I've never seen it done quite like we do at Mission Adelante. Our Bhutanese English classes combine quality English curriculum with real relationship building. Most classes have an English speaking partner for every 2 Bhutanese students, so students get lots of speaking practice in every class. Friendships usually develop over the trimester and often lead to friendships outside the classroom, too.

Course topics in the lower two levels cover basics like family, places around town, health problems, time, money and jobs. The upper level classes use actions to learn stories from the Bible. The vocabulary is challenging, and studying in small groups makes it very interactive. The following video is of last summer's level 2 class taking their final exam. It was a small group of around 10 students meeting at the Stetler's home, but there were three other classes as well as Kid's Club meeting at the Mission Adelante building.

getting started...

Thanks for visiting! I plan to use this blog to explain more about Mission Adelante, the Bhutanese refugees, and our family's adventures in moving to a more urban neighborhood. Please consider bookmarking, following or adding this blog to a reader so you can keep up with what we are doing!

This photo is from our first Mission Adelante Bhutanese party in April 2010. We had just completed our first session of ESL and kids club, and we celebrated with a potluck, cultural dancing, awards and a message. Paula, Yogita and I were chatting while we waited for dinner to begin.
